Hairstyle – Your Style!
“A model must be ready to experiment with her hairstyles”.
This was one remark I wholly remember from the time I first stepped into the world of TV & print commercials. Yes, we have to take care of our skin, looks, presentation but one often forgets to give equal priority to the tresses! Well, ideally, the point of changing your hairstyle is that you want to discover a side of you that is completely, uniquely and beautifully different. The hairstyle should match your complexion perfectly, flatter the angles of your face and bring out the stunning colour of your eyes. It should make you feel incredible.
Does your hair make you feel that way at the moment?
Well, you know you need a hair makeover when
- You’ve had the same hairstyle for decades.
- You always feel like pulling your hair back into a ponytail or a bun everyday.
- You are afraid to let down your hair.
- You are tired of letting down your hair.
- No one compliments your hairstyle, ever.
I have experimented with quite a few hairstyles over the past few years. Some 5 years back, I used to have really long black-brown hair. The picture above was taken during one of my Indian classical dance performances in high school. Very obediently, I had pinned my hair from the middle to make it look neat. I am sure everyone has experimented with this “tie-your-hair-from-middle” look. Apart from this, won’t it be nice to be able to do some different yet easy hair makeovers, as and when you have different occasions to attend? Well, here are some styles I learnt over the years while I was working with different stylists. I would like to share them today. Sit back, relax and enjoy!
The Braided Bun
The above picture is taken from one of my first photo-shoots. Notice how stylish the side bun looks? This was one of my favourite looks which I had tried a couple of times on my own as well. Simply part hair on one side, do a side braid and secure it with a small hair elastic. Gather all the hair and roll it up into a bun. Secure with bobby pins. As easy as that! Go Retro!
Yes, it’s not the 60s but the bouffant has always been one of my all-time favourite hairstyles! Use a bit of moose at the roots before blow-drying. Divide your hair to a back half and front half. For the front half, make a side parting. For the back half, use a brush/ comb and backcomb hair sections. Pull back the backcombed section of the hair and pinch in the center. Secure with two bobby pins in a crisscross pattern to lock them into place. Tease the front half. And there, you have it!

Scrunched Hair
No, you do not have to literally “wet” your hair to get this look. You must have seen this look on many celebrities. The above picture is taken from my first portfolio. The stylish “wet hair” look is becoming more and more popular with many social crowds and it is no rocket science! Simply use a gel or leave-on conditioner & apply on your hair after getting out of the shower. Using your finger-tips, brush through your hair and try to avoid touching your hair throughout the day. This will make your hair appear to be wet and keep it from frizzing, as well. Can’t believe how easy this? Check out the tutorial below :

Well, the above are some hair style options you can experiment with.
However, if none of the above fascinates you, I suggest go for a hair-makeover!
But remember, if you are opting for a change in hairstyle, know your limitations. Know what you like, dislike – look through photos of hairstyles, print them, clip them, and take them with you to your stylist. It’s true that a picture says a thousand words. I think it’s important to give your hairstylist a little creative freedom to make suggestions, but it’s more important that you get a new style that you love.
Nothing can change your look like a fresh new color and highlights!
Yes, for the above shoot I had gone for red streaks and caramel low-lights.
For those who are afraid to change your hair colour completely can opt for highlights instead.
This may be just the ticket to a great hairstyle change. Highlights, when done right, are stylish and can add lots of oomph to one’s personality.
Short hair can be sexy, feminine, edgy, romantic, and beautiful.
When you’re ready for something easy to style with a lot of personality, a short haircut can be a great answer.
And that’s what I did in the above picture. My hair has always been long. So short hair was definitely a refreshing new start.
Yes, I have done it all. Straight, wet, short and now curls! Nope, it ain’t permed hair.
These were temporary ironed-curls that my stylist did for me during another ad shoot.
Well, many people fear that curly hair can make one look bigger in size. I insist that this is an absolute myth! Straight hair gets boring after a while. But curls are interesting and can add lots of volume. So if you just want a temporary change of look, try getting your hair iron-curled! They are quite sexy, don’t you think?
And for all those people who are either too lazy or afraid to experiment with the above, go for a simple side braid. A simple side braid is more casual and appropriate for a day-look. The look is youthful, relaxed and not too severe. Wave your hair first and start braiding very close to the nape of the neck.
As of now, this is the look I have. When layers are properly chosen, they can make thick hair easier to manage and give thin hair a fuller appearance. One of the biggest mistakes people make about their hairstyle is fear of layers. As we get older, layers can frame the face in a complimentary way, create depth, enhance body, and define a desirable shape in your hair.
