Another must-have memento is a lacquerware known as lielaa jehun, which comes from the island of Thuladhoo in Baa Atoll. Traditionally made from local wood, the lacquerware is crafted into items such as walking sticks, boxes, trays and vases. Really beautiful! Reed Mats are another local handicraft item worth considering. These mats are naturally dyed and often carry interesting black and brown motifs.

5) National Museum

Housed in a small, three-storey building in one corner of the Sultan’s Park, Maldive’s National Museum is the only remaining part of the original sultan’s palace. A rather gaudy new Chinese-gifted building has been built next door, which the museum will eventually move in to, making way for the old building to house a reconstruction of how the Sultan’s Palace’s interiors would have looked.
