KATIE Holmes is trying to improve her complexion — with SNAIL SLIME.
The star is slathering face creams enriched with mucin, a protein from the molluscs.
Snail slime has been elevated from the garden, and is now being claimed as the new miracle face-fixer in the U.S. While creams containing snail slime have been popular in Korea and Africa for a few years, brands such as Missha, Dr. Jart+ and Labcconte have begun to bring them Stateside. Primarily marketed as an acne solution, the shelled slug’s mucus is also believed to reduce pigmentation and scarring, as well as beat wrinkles.
One of Katie’s good friends said: “Last year was hard for Katie. She knows she’s got a lot of catching up to do in her career and is going all out to look amazing for auditions to land a dream film role. A friend recommended using snail gel and she’s really happy with how smooth her skin looks.”
Mucin’s apparent properties were discovered after Chilean farm workers picking snails from crops noticed their hands getting smoother. The beauty potential of snail slime when Chilean snail farmers also noticed their skin healing quickly, with no scars, when they handled snails for the French food market.
We can’t help but wonder why she needs any beauty treatment. Katie was recently named one of GQ mag’s Hottest Women of the 21st Century.
