Epicurean Market – A Taste of Marina Bay Sands

This past weekend, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore hosted its first Epicurean Market. Spotlight had a wonderful time as we covered the entire 3-day culinary extravaganza and mostly what fascinated us was the participating “celebrity chefs” and the sheer deliciousness of their food. Already a dining destination in its own right, Epicurean Market comprised talks, demonstrations, workshops and Master Classes. Most importantly, the event gave visitors a chance to sample small bites from over 80 of the mammoth complex’s restaurants. A few noteworthy celebrity chefs—including Justin Quek of Sky on 57, Tetsuya Wakuda of Waku Ghin, and Nancy Silverton of Mozza—conducted some interestingly executed cooking classes as well.

Epicurean Market ran for 3 days, from 25-27 January 2013. Held in Sands Expo & Convention hall C, the event was targeted at food lovers, food experts and people from the food industry or anybody who wanted to learn the secrets behind creating that special dish, or immersing oneself in an experience in discovering how to make the perfect chocolate fondant at home.

The “celebrity chefs” area was sleek and posh. Large billboards of the celebrities behind the participating restaurants loomed high above the crowd. Sleek counters and show kitchens manned by teams of white-jacketed, aproned professionals spoke of gustatory delights to come. Just beyond these gleaming mini-restaurants, participating chefs showed off their skills in a well-designed theatre, complete with a fully-kitted out and brand new Miele kitchen and I got to present some of these exciting cook shows, myself with the esteemed chefs.

Overall, the food was awesome. There were so many delicious samplings at different booths.  From the raw, marinated scallop at the Tetsuya Wakuda‘s booth to Justin Quek’s amazing prawn salad, dressed in a ginger flower dressing to Thai sausage and fried rice dish at Daniel Boulud’s booth – everything was outstanding, ingenious and very tasty! Check out some more pictures below.
