Top 10 Not-So-Known Bollywood Family Revelations
So the other day, I was doing a story on the Kapoor family tree when I came across some startling revelations. As they say, you cannot escape your genes! Who is related to who and who is not – you must check out the following & see if you already knew it! Time to connect the dots …
1) Purab Kohli, Shekhar Kapur and Dev Anand are related.
Legendary actor Dev Anand’s nephew is film maker Shekhar Kapur and Purab Kohli (actor) is the nephew of Shekhar Kapur. Did you already know this Nephew Tree?
2) Kunal Kapoor & Amitabh Bachchan are soon going to be related.
Well that is because Kunal is dating Big B’s brother, Ajitabh Bachchan’s daughter – Naina!
3) Mahesh Bhatt and Vikram Bhatt are NOT related.
Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt are the sons of notable film director Nanabhai Bhatt. Vikram Bhatt’s father is well-known cinematographer Pravin Bhatt. Vikram’s grandfather, Vijay Bhatt was a noted producer-director-screenwriter of Hindi cinema, who made films like Ram Rajya (1943), Baiju Bawra (1952), Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959) and Himalaya Ki God Mein (1965). So although they worked a lot together and share the same surname, they are not related.
4) Mithun is related to the Kapoor family.
Yes, our Mithun da married Yogeeta Bali (known to friends as Pinky) who happens to be the niece of Shammi Kapoor’s first wife Geeta Bali. Now how many of you knew this? Not to mention that Yogeeta’s ex-husband Kishore Kumar’s sister was Kajol’s grandmother!
5) Kjo’s mother is the sister of Yash Chopra.
Ok shoot me. I am sure all Bollywood fanatics would know this but I confess I had no idea about this. So Vilayati Raj Chopra had 3 sons and 1 daughter – Baldev Chopra (who started BR films), Yash Chopra (YRF), Vinod Chopra (Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s father) and Heeru Chopra. Heeru Chopra later got married to the late Yash Johar of Dharma Productions & became Heeru Johar! In that way even Anupama Chopra & Karan Johar are related! She’s his bhabhi? Right? Hain? Ok – Go figure!
6) Amrita Rao is related to Guru Dutt!
And that’s not all … Shyam Benegal’s paternal grandmother and Guru Dutt’s maternal grandmother were sisters. Kalpana Lajmi (film director) is the maternal niece of Guru Dutt. And Amrita Rao’s grandfather and Guru Dutt were second cousins. Quite a revelation huh?
7) Mani Ratnam is related to Kamal Hassan.
So, Kamal Hassan happens to be Mani’s wife, Suhasini’s paternal uncle. Yes, Suhasini’s father Charuhasan’s youngest brother is Kamal Hassan. It’s funny because Suhasini is older than Kamal Hassan. Mmmhhh…
8) Anil Kapoor & Rishi Kapoor are also related.
Ok I am sure many people know this. Surinder Kapoor (Anil Kapoor’s father) was a distant cousin of Prithviraj Kapoor. He even worked as the secretary of Geeta Bali (Shammi Kapoor’s wife) before he went on to become a producer.
9) Amrita Singh and Ayub Khan are related to Dilip Kumar.
Amrita’s mother is the niece of Begum Para. Begum Para was married to Nasir Khan, Dilip Kumar’s brother. And Ayub Khan is Nasir Khan’s son and Dilip Kumar’s nephew.
10) Om Puri and Amrish Puri are NOT brothers.
This has been quite a revelation and I am ashamed to call myself a Bollywood junkie. Well, for the longest time I was under the impression that Amrish Puri and Om Puri are actually brothers! But NO.. they are not related. Amrish Puri is the brother of Madan Puri who was also known as a very successful villain of his time.
