Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Indian friends! The spirit of being Indian runs in our blood. So, on this note here is a look at the top 5 best Independence Day Movies to watch on this day with your family and friends. These are some of my personal favourite Bollywood film that are patriotic, commendable and makes you proud to be an Indian.
1) Lagaan

A superb storyline with a great star cast, Lagaan was India’s official Oscar entry in the Best Foreign Film category. Lagaan which means “taxes” dealt with the issue of patriotism in a slightly different way. It integrated the concept of India’s most watched game “Cricket” with nationality. The result as expected turned out to be a huge success. Starring the perfectionist Aamir Khan, the ancient pre-independence historic feel could be grasped throughout the movie and the main point for its success was its easy connection with the masses.
2) Rang De Basanti

Rang De Basanti was the ‘coming of the age’ genre film. The film chronicled the life of a group of friends and how the death of a friend, changes their lives forever. The movie created a significant history for itself, after being hailed as one of the best patriotic films for the current Indian youth. Directed by Omprakash Mehra, the movie has a brilliant character transition portrayal by Aamir Khan and great supporting act by all the other actors involved.
3) Chak De India

This was Shahrukh Khan’s best performance for me. Donning an unconventional role of a Hockey player turned coach, who avenges the humiliation he had to wrongly face as a player, SRK trains the Indian women’s team to the World Championship Victory. This was Shimit Amin’s first big movie and he certainly did proper justice. Jaideep Sahni’s writing was much appreciated while Salim-Sulaimaan’s music also rocked the charts for long.
4) Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

The 2013 film, “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”, was Bollywood’s ode to Indian star athlete, Milkha Singh. Based on the life of “The Flying Sikh” Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete, who was a national champion runner and an Olympian – the film also showcased snippets of India-Pakistan separation and what Milkha Singh went through in his personal life. The film stars actor-singer-director-producer Farhan Akhtar and Divya Dutta and it definitely gathered a highly positive response from critics and performed exceptionally well at the box office.
5) Swades

A must watch perhaps for all NRIs! Swades stars Shahrukh Khan who plays a well to do NRI and comes to India in search of his Nanny. Eventually, he finds it difficult to break the bond of attachment to his homeland and returns to India forever. The emotional portrayal coupled with the phenomenal music makes it one of the best patriotic films to look out for!
Tell me guys, which is your favourite “must watch” film on Independence day?
