In 2018, the Saqib Saleem starrer, Rangbaaz season 1 had stirred up a remarkable amount of interest among viewers. The action-packed web series set against the rustic background of the Gorakhpur of the 1990s truly captured the world of crime and won many hearts! And now ZEE5 is back with the second season titled – Rangbaaz Phirse.
As soon as the series starts, we are thrown into the city of Rajasthan where we meet a fearless gangster played by Jimmy Shergill. It revolves around his journey in this mind-numbing world of crime. Rajasthan is shown as a city that reminds you of a certain ‘Wasseypur’. Although the show is set in Rajasthan, this nine-episode series has been extensively shot in Bhopal. So, the crew recreated Rajasthan in Bhopal – wow! I am not going to give you any spoilers but all I can tell you is that it is a sprawling story of complicated characters who are depraved and finally doomed. What’s more interesting is that the entire series is based on the real-life story of a gangster, Anandpal Singh. For those who do not know, Anandpal Singh was a notorious gangster, accused of multiple murders and extortions. However, his alleged encounter by the Rajasthan police in 2017 resulted in many protests. People including his community, family and lawyers demanded a CBI investigation as they claimed that he wanted to surrender yet the police killed him.
What I love most about the show is the way the characters are written and developed. I like how Jimmy Shergill has portrayed his character. It is the first web series where he plays the lead. His character is complex, headstrong but still has a heart of gold. It is not an easy role to pull off, but he does a fantastic job.
This Web Series also stars Sharad Kelkar, Sushant Singh, Zeeshan Ayyub, Gul Panag in pivotal roles. The whole cast also had to learn and master the Rajasthani dialect for their roles. They were all decent.
Overall, if you are someone who likes thrillers and stimulating storytelling, you should catch Rangbaaz Phirse as it interestingly spins a twisted tale of crime drama!
