After 20 years, the Supreme Court upheld Sanjay Dutt‘s conviction in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case for illegal arms possession and sentenced him to five years of imprisonment.
Sanjay Dutt speaks up: “I have already suffered for 20 years and been in jail for 18 months. If they want me to suffer more I have to be strong. I am heart-broken because today along with me, my three children and my wife and my family will undergo the punishment. I have always respected the judicial system and will continue to do so, even with tears in my eyes”.
Sanjay Dutt is one of the leading actors in the Hindi Film Industry and apparently has 250 crore (2.5 billion) rupees riding on him. Dutt has four films in the pipeline, including Raju Hirani’s “Peekay”, K S Ravikumar’s “Policegiri”, Rensil D’Silva’s “Unglee” and Apoorva Lakhia’s remake of “Zanjeer”. Dutt also has a cameo in Rajkumar Gupta’s “Ghanchakkar” but shooting for that film has been completed.
Sanjay Dutt further added “I am going to complete all my films and won’t let anyone down. I am overwhelmed by the support of my fans the industry people, the media and all the well-wishers”.
Bollywood stars are larger-than-life personalities in India and fans love them! But is that a reason enough to overlook their flaws? Dutt was in his 30s when he was first arrested, mature enough to know he was committing a crime. But do things change just because he’s an actor?
To that Sanjay Dutt responds “I know in my heart that I have always been a good human being, respected the system and always been loyal to my country. My family is very emotional right now and I have to be strong for them. I am shattered and in emotional distress. God is great and he will guide me through this.”
The Bollywood fraternity immediately took to Twitter and expressed sadness and shock after the sentence was made by the Supreme Court yesterday.

The 53 year old actor has already spent 18 months in jail, but will have to surrender himself for the remaining tenure of three-and-a-half years in four weeks. Well, we can only wait and watch if there will be a change in the sentence as Sanjay Dutt still has a chance to file a review petition against the verdict.
