We often associate summer fashion/style with things which are flowy, colourful and bright – like for instance, tea dresses, maxis, floral gowns etc but I would say these are very typical. The temperature is soaring high and for a fuss free and casual look, give the summery dresses a break and go for something a little edgy!
I have two trends to share with you today – Team up a pair of trousers with a mini top OR pick a check shirt (maybe from the men’s section) and wear it with denim.. these are two styles which I have noticed coming on its own this season.
Trousers with cropped tops
Trousers (esp wide leg trousers) can actually elongate legs, make a waist look tiny, correct body types and proportion. You can go for a colourful pair of trousers and look elegant with formal top. This works great as office wear. Apart from this, you can pick a cropped top or a tucked in top and pair it with high wasited wide leg trousers. Yes, it’s a trend from the 70s but I guess it works rather well for this season as well… what I personally like about this look – is that it’s very comfortable and looks good on almost any shape.
If you have a pear-shaped figure, you can wear a top with a darker-colored pair of pants in a softer fabric which actually helps with your curves. What that does is it draws the attention upwards. Now if you carry your weight around your tummy, have a looser-fitting shirt. Have it roughly the roughly same color as your trousers, because that creates a clear filler where it has a slimming effect. And wear a contrasting scarf, which also draws the attention upwards away from the tummy area. If you have a larger bust or broader shoulders, but you have slim hips, what you need to do is wear the more pants, and team it with a softer top, such as this batwing top. This is more in keeping with your curvier top.
Plaid Shirts
Now coming to check or plaid shirts, I’ve always had a thing for rugged shirts and denim. I personally love to wear jeans with an oversized shirt and chunky pair of heels for that feminine touch. But you can wear a checked shirt with a tartan skirt in a babydoll format, or with a black mini skirt. In addition to doing the tie it around your waist thing, street style shots are showing check shirts over graphic tees, under biker jacket, and tucked into white denim. It’s uber stylish..

All in all, it is a look that keeps coming and going from the spotlight, but if you love it, rock it!
