No one will and can ever replace them! So, a big shout-out goes out to all the mothers from all of us at Spotlight! As we’re all taking out time today to celebrate this special occasion, here’s our pick of the top 5 Bollywood films to catch on Mother’s Day!

1) English Vinglish

If you love your mum, you will automatically fall in love with English Vinglish! One and a half decades on, Sridevi has made a high-profile return in debutant director Gauri Shinde’s endearing comedy-drama about a middle-aged Indian woman whose life is transformed by a fateful decision she makes while on a one-month visit to the US. A warm-hearted film that Gauri Shinde dedicates to all mothers, English Vinglish commendably weighs against many types of discrimination, including, but not restricted to, ones that stem from one’s linguistic choices and facility. This movie about a woman who decides to show her husband and daughter that she’s better than they think & the perils of taking the familiar for granted. Must watch with your mum!

2) Zakhm

Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, starring Ajay Devgan, Pooja Bhatt, Sonali Bendre, Kunal Khemu and Nagarjuna, Zakhm was a movie that was made way ahead of its times. This movie is closely based on Mahesh Bhatt’s own life and it explores the relationship between Bhatt and his mother. This was the film which got Ajay his first National award too. Though the story is set against the backdrop of the communal riots, the film dwells at length on the odd and compelling relationship between the mother and son, where the son is more of a confidante, one who dreams of the day his parents will finally unite. Kunal Khemu, as the young Ajay, has done a fine job. The film definitely touches a chord somewhere. It is more of a personal statement, since it is a tribute to his mother, the woman Mahesh Bhatt has always been obsessed with. Ajay, who depicted Bhatt himself, in the film let his eyes do most of the talking in this film. 3) Kya Kehna

Kya Kehna tells the story of an unwed mother who defies the norms of society. The film has been treated with sensitivity it deserves and there are several scenes that linger in your memory for a long time. Preity Zinta played the protagonist and she was wonderful in her second film. Priya, is shown powerful, not meek and helpless. Whether it is slapping of her Vice-Principal or her wish to deliver a baby, thereby defying the norms of the society, or rejecting the baby’s father and opting for the other man in the end, the story is an honest attempt at tackling a bold theme! 4) Taare Zameen Par

The canvas of the film is so sensitive, so vast, so meaningful that it includes any and every child in its ambit. Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par explores the relationships a 8 year boy has with his father, his mother and his life. So much so, it becomes the story of any and every child. The story connects instantly with every parent, every mother and child and what uplifts the film is its very simplicity, sensitivity and its performances.  The song “Maa” gets back to its elements with a beautiful portrayal of a child’s view of his eternal companion, his own godsend mother where he appreciates the role maa plays in his life. Words cannot express how eloquently and emotionally Shankar Mahadevan conveyed this sentimental song. It’s ethereal!  Grab a few tissues and watch this film – it is bound to tug the heartstrings!

5) Dil Kya Kare

Although the film was heavily panned by critics, I personally loved the Ajay Devgn-Kajol-Mahima Chaudary film, Dil Kya Kare. The story of two mothers, a conflict over trust, love, deception and infidelity that questions motivations, actions and complexity of human behavior. Emotions are well-crafted and Jha’s take on marriage, motherhood is more natural than Bollywood’s standard sanitised version. And can I add on – the songs are simply beautiful !
